Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that commonly affects senior dogs and cats. It is caused by breakdown of the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones where they meet to form joints.

Cartilage breakdown occurs due to:

  • Age-related wear and tear - Cartilage loses its elasticity and ability to regenerate as pets get older.

  • Abnormal stress on joints - Obesity, joint injuries, or developmental joint abnormalities.

  • Reduced joint lubrication - Joint fluid loses its viscosity and shock absorbing properties.

As cartilage erodes, inflammation occurs and bones start to rub together. This causes pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility. Bone spurs can also develop as the body tries to repair damage

While OA cannot be reversed, effective management improves joint function and quality of life. Our rehab team uses a multimodal approach:

  • Weight loss to reduce joint stress

  • Pain control with anti-inflammatories and other medications

  • Joint supplements to support cartilage health

  • Custom exercise programs to improve flexibility, strength, range of motion

  • Therapies like laser, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, shockwave

  • At-home care advice on joint protection and comfort as well as traction aids to use around the house.

Early OA management is key to slowing disease progression and retaining mobility. We partner with you and your veterinarian to develop the optimal treatment plan for your pet's needs and lifestyle.
